Moved funds onto Base to enjoy the cheap fees, and now you want to bring them back to Ethereum mainnet? Withdrawing from a Layer 2 back to Layer 1 works a little differently than depositing — most importantly, the official route takes about a week.
Here’s the five-step withdrawal process, plus the faster alternatives and when each makes sense.

Base is an optimistic rollup, which means withdrawals go through a challenge period of roughly 7 days. This is a security feature: it gives the network time to catch fraudulent withdrawals. Your funds are safe during the wait — just locked in the bridge contract until the period ends.
You’ll need a small amount of ETH on Base to pay the withdrawal transaction’s gas, and the same wallet address on Ethereum mainnet to receive the funds (your address is identical on both networks). Plan around the delay — don’t start a withdrawal for funds you’ll need tomorrow.
The 5 Steps
- Open the official Base bridge at bridge.base.org — typed by hand, as always. Connect your wallet.
- Switch to withdraw mode and set the direction: from Base to Ethereum. Select ETH (or the token you’re withdrawing).
- Enter the amount and review the summary. The interface will show the estimated 7-day waiting period.
- Confirm the withdrawal transaction in your wallet and pay the Base gas fee. Your funds enter the challenge period.
- Claim after ~7 days. Return to the bridge, find your pending withdrawal, and submit the final claim transaction on Ethereum mainnet (this costs mainnet gas). The funds then land in your wallet.
Faster Alternatives and Safety
Need funds faster? Third-party bridges and liquidity networks can move Base → Ethereum in minutes by swapping with their own liquidity — but they charge a premium and add counterparty risk. For small, urgent amounts they’re reasonable; for large sums, the official route’s patience pays. Our bridge trust models guide helps you compare.
Watch out for fake “instant Base withdrawal” sites — a classic phishing lure. The official bridge never asks for your seed phrase, and no legitimate service can skip the challenge period for free. To understand why the wait exists, see L2 escape hatches explained.

The Bottom Line
Withdrawing from Base to Ethereum is simple but slow by design: initiate on Base, wait about 7 days, claim on mainnet. For urgent needs, vetted third-party bridges trade a fee for speed. This guide is for education only — not financial advice.
