A Ledger hardware wallet keeps your crypto keys on a physical device, offline and out of reach of malware. Setup takes about 15 minutes, and it’s the single best security upgrade most beginners can make. Here’s exactly how to do it safely.
id=”before-you-start”>Before You Start
Buy your Ledger only from the official manufacturer — never secondhand. A tampered device can steal everything. Know this: a legitimate new Ledger never comes with a pre-written recovery phrase. If yours does, don’t use it.
Setting Up Your Ledger: Step by Step
1. Unbox and inspect. Confirm the packaging is sealed and intact, then connect the device with the included cable.
2. Install Ledger Live. Download the companion app only from the official Ledger website (type the URL yourself). Your keys never leave the hardware.
3. Set a PIN on the device. Choose 4–8 digits you’ll remember. Three wrong guesses wipes the device — a safety feature.
4. Write down your 24-word recovery phrase. The device shows it word by word — write each on the recovery sheet, in order, with pen on paper. This phrase is your wallet.
5. Confirm the phrase on-device. The Ledger quizzes you on random words to prove you recorded them correctly.
6. Store the phrase securely. Paper in a fireproof safe is ideal; consider a second copy elsewhere. Never photograph it or store it digitally.
7. Install apps and add accounts. In Ledger Live, install the blockchain apps you need (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and add accounts.
8. Do a small test transaction. Send a tiny amount to your Ledger address and back out. This proves everything works before real money arrives.
Using Your Ledger Day to Day
Daily use: connect the device, open Ledger Live, and physically confirm each transaction on the device screen. Malware can’t approve transactions without your thumb on the buttons. Keep firmware updated through Ledger Live — but never follow update links from emails. For wallet options generally, see our wallet explainer.

The Bottom Line
Setting up a Ledger is straightforward: buy direct, install Ledger Live from the official site, set a PIN, record your 24-word phrase on paper, store it safely, and test with small amounts. Your keys stay offline and every transaction needs physical approval.
