Turning ETH into USDT is one of the simplest swaps in crypto — both tokens live on Ethereum, so no bridging or cross-chain tricks are needed. Whether you want to lock in profits or park funds in a stablecoin, you can do the whole thing in a few minutes.
This five-step tutorial covers the two beginner-friendly methods: swapping in your own wallet with a decentralized exchange, or trading on a centralized exchange. Pick whichever feels more comfortable.
id=”pick-your-method”>Step 1 — Pick Your Method
Option A: Swap in your wallet. If your ETH is already in a self-custody wallet like MetaMask or Rabby, open a decentralized exchange (a “DEX”) such as app.uniswap.org — type the address yourself, never click a link from a message — connect your wallet, and trade directly. You keep full control the entire time.
Option B: Use a centralized exchange. If your ETH is on an exchange already, or you prefer a guided interface with customer support, just use the exchange’s convert or spot-trading feature. This is the easiest option if you’re brand new.
Steps 2–5 — Execute the Swap
Step 2 — Connect or fund. For the DEX route, connect your wallet to the exchange site and make sure you’re on the Ethereum network. For the exchange route, make sure your ETH balance is showing.
Step 3 — Select ETH → USDT. Choose ETH as what you’re giving and USDT as what you’re getting. Enter the amount. On a DEX, you’ll see an estimated output — on an exchange, a quoted rate.
Step 4 — Review price, slippage, and gas. This is the step beginners skip and regret. Check that the USDT amount looks right versus the market price. On a DEX, set slippage tolerance (0.5%–1% is normal for this liquid pair) and note the Ethereum gas fee, which can be a few dollars or more when the network is busy.
Step 5 — Confirm and verify. Approve the transaction in your wallet (DEX route) or hit confirm (exchange route). Wait for confirmation, then check your USDT balance. Done — if you want to move that USDT to another chain afterward, see our Solana-to-Ethereum swap walkthrough for how cross-chain moves work.
Fees and Safety Notes
On a DEX: Ethereum gas plus a small protocol fee (often 0.3% or less). On an exchange: a trading fee, typically 0.1%–1%. During busy times, gas can eat small swaps — wait for quieter hours or use the exchange route.
Watch for fake DEX sites (type the URL or use a bookmark) and unlimited token approvals — approve only what you need. Also protect your swaps from MEV bots, which skim value from on-chain trades.

The Bottom Line
Swapping ETH to USDT takes five steps: pick a method, connect or fund, select the pair, review the quote and fees, then confirm. It’s one of the safest first swaps to learn on — just verify the site is genuine and double-check the numbers. This guide is for education only — not financial advice.
