Backpack is a Solana wallet from the Mad Lads team, notable for built-in xNFT support — apps that live inside your wallet.
This eight-step guide covers safe installation, proper backup, and core features — without the usual beginner mistakes.
id=”install-and-create”>Steps 1–4 — Install and Create Your Wallet
Step 1 — Download from the official source only. Go to backpack.app by typing it yourself (or use your device’s official app store) and install from there. Fake wallet apps are a classic scam — never install from a link someone sends you.
Step 2 — Create a new wallet. Open the app and choose “Create new wallet.” If you already have a Solana seed phrase from another wallet, you can import it instead — but for learning, a fresh wallet is cleaner.
Step 3 — Write down your seed phrase — on paper. Backpack will show a secret recovery phrase. Copy it by hand, in order, and store it offline. This phrase is your wallet: anyone who sees it can take everything.
Step 4 — Set up your lock. Choose a strong password and enable biometrics (fingerprint or face unlock) if your device supports it. This protects the app on your device, though it can’t help if someone gets your seed phrase.
Steps 5–8 — Fund and Use It
Step 5 — Receive your first SOL. Tap “Receive,” copy your Solana address, and send a small amount of SOL to it from an exchange. Wait for it to arrive before doing anything else.
Step 6 — Try a swap. Backpack has built-in swapping. Try converting a tiny amount of SOL to another token to learn the flow — quotes are shown up front, and Solana fees are fractions of a cent.
Step 7 — Explore xNFTs cautiously. xNFTs are mini-apps that run inside Backpack. Treat unknown ones like unknown websites: don’t grant permissions or sign things you don’t understand. See our account abstraction wallet explainer for where wallet tech is heading.
Step 8 — Review your security settings. Confirm your seed backup exists, check app permissions, and remove anything unfamiliar. Our guide to earning free crypto lists legitimate ways to grow a small balance.
Staying Safe With Backpack
Backpack is a “hot” wallet — always online — so keep everyday amounts in it, not life savings. The biggest risks: phishing (fake sites and apps), malicious xNFTs, and losing your seed phrase.
Never type your seed phrase into any website, and be suspicious of any xNFT or message that pressures you to sign quickly. For larger holdings, pair Backpack with a hardware wallet, which Backpack supports.

The Bottom Line
Backpack is an approachable Solana wallet: install from the official source, back up your seed phrase on paper, fund it with a little SOL, and explore. Keep everyday amounts in it, guard the seed phrase fiercely, and be picky about which xNFTs you trust. This guide is for education only — not financial advice.
