Every time you trade on a DEX or interact with a DeFi app, your wallet asks you to “approve” a token spend. Most beginners click through without thinking — but that approval is a standing permission for a smart contract to move your tokens. Understanding approvals is one of the highest-leverage safety skills in crypto.
Here is what token approvals are, why they matter, and how to manage them.
id=”what-approvals-are”>What Token Approvals Actually Are
Smart contracts cannot take tokens from your wallet unless you explicitly allow it. An approval is that permission: you authorise a specific contract to spend up to a specific amount of a specific token on your behalf. The first time you swap a token on a DEX, you sign an approval transaction, then the actual swap transaction.
The catch: many apps request unlimited approvals by default — permission to spend any amount of that token, forever, until you revoke it. That is convenient (no more approval prompts), but it means a compromised or malicious contract could drain your entire balance of that token at any time.
Why Unlimited Approvals Are Risky
Several major DeFi exploits worked exactly this way: attackers compromised a trusted contract, and because thousands of users had granted it unlimited approvals, the attackers could sweep everyone’s tokens. The users did nothing wrong on the day of the hack — the dangerous permission had been granted months earlier and forgotten.
This is also how many phishing “drainer” sites work: they trick you into signing an approval disguised as something innocent, then empty the approved token balance. If you understand approvals, these attacks become much harder to fall for.
How to Manage and Revoke Them Safely
Prefer exact-amount approvals when the app offers a choice — approve only what the current transaction needs. Periodically review your approvals with a revocation tool (your wallet or a trusted approval-checker site, URL verified as always) and revoke permissions for apps you no longer use. Make it a quarterly habit, like changing smoke-detector batteries.
When revoking, you will pay a small gas fee per revocation — batch them sensibly. And going forward, treat every approval prompt as a decision: do I trust this contract with this token, in this amount? The Bottom Line
Token approvals are standing permissions — powerful, necessary, and dangerous when forgotten. Approve exact amounts, question every prompt, and clean house regularly. Ten minutes of approval hygiene beats any recovery plan.
